Add Videos

Video services offer "embed" codes that can be used to add video play windows to wiki pages. We offer a few tips for working with this sort of media.

We'll create a paragraph which contains html markup in two parts: one from the video service, the other which we will type in as our own custom caption for the video. Don't leave out the caption. It will become important later.

See how to Add Paragraphs to make a place to type or paste new content.

Embeds

YouTube's Sharing options includes an embed tag with a drop-down to choose the desired size.

Find the video you would like to embed. Look for links or buttons labeled sharing. Skip sharing by email or facebook or other services. Find something labeled Embed or HTML meant for use by web designers. This will have a few lines of text, usually starting with an IFRAME tag.

Copy the embed tag text and paste it into a new Paragraph. Don't save it right away because we have a few adjustments to do first.

Adjustments

Add a few words of caption to the very bottom of the paragraph outside any of the HTML tags. This will show underneath the video and gives us something to double-click to get back to the wiki editor when we want to make further adjustments.

Adjust the with of the embed tag. This is usually specified as a width=640px argument to the IFRAME tag. Change this to 420px, an attractive size on wiki. If a height is specified, change it by a similar proportion. Height never seems too critical and can easily be adjusted if the video appears too tall or too flat.

Vimeo adds a lot of HTML captioning in their embed codes that you will probably want to remove to avoid a cluttered look. If there is information there that you value, consider moving it to separate paragraphs on the page.

One video is plenty on a federated wiki page. If you have lots of videos, consider giving each page a short descriptive title and elaborate on this in a keyword laden introductory paragraph at top of page.
